Most other jobs exist to create products that are purely functional. While any profession can have its rewards, the range of impact in producing shoes or cars or toothpaste is limited. Our product has no function other than to entertain. Its only limits are set by our imaginations.

You climb down your ladder to teach me origami on my mother’s lawn. You fold every blade of grass into a tiny crane. A breeze & they look to be soaring. From my chair I am higher than even birds can fly.

The stone fruit tree in my gardenmade its confession: “I am barren.” I did as my mother had instructed. I tookits branches in my hands and pressed the warmth of my cheek against the bark.“Are you certain?” In the gusting winds the tree looked to be nodding, a buoyin the waters. I thought of all the fruit that will never know the insides ofmy mouth. I spelled p-e-a-c-h-c-o-t in my head and swallowed. “My leaves arefalling off,” the tree said. And: “When will you send for the man with the ax to chop me by the ankles?” I consoled the tree with hushed sounds and There,There’s. This technique was of my own design. “No one is coming,” I said. “Youare still my beautiful tree.” The winds picked up and we swayed together for along time. Back and forth, back and forth.
